Each month at our Block Connectors’ Meeting we receive a challenge. By definition a challenge is a call. A call to participate, to engage. And that is exactly what we do. A summons to be creative and courageous as we seek to connect on our blocks. Each month’s challenge looks a little different. But each month we challenge ourselves to put good neighboring into practice. To be the hands and feet of community.
This month as I shared the challenge for the month of February a newer Block Connector spoke up. She posed a question. Do you ever share these challenges with the broader neighborhood? The answer to her question was no. I had not been sharing these challenges outside of Block Connector Meetings. But, I instantly loved the idea. A common goal for our neighborhood each month? A monthly good neighboring challenge? Yes please! So, we’re going to give it a try. Each month I’ll share the Good Neighbor Challenge. We’ll see how it grows and evolves through the months. Who knows where it will lead, but I am up for the adventure!
So, for the month of February our Good Neighbor Challenge is to personally invite each home on your block to join Nextdoor. “Nextdoor is the private social network for you, your neighbors and your community. It’s the easiest way for you and your neighbors to talk online and make all of your lives better in the real world. And it’s free.
- Quickly get the word out about a break-in
- Organize a Neighborhood Watch Group
- Track down a trustworthy babysitter
- Find out who does the best paint job in town
- Ask for help keeping an eye out for a lost dog
- Find a new home for an outgrown bike
- Finally call that nice man down the street by his first name
Nextdoor’s mission is to provide a trusted platform where neighbors work together to build stronger, safer, happier communities, all over the world.” Nextdoor exists to assist people in connecting with their neighbors. It is just one more tool that we can use to get to know the people around us. Westcore Neighbors also uses Nextdoor regularly to spread the word about who we are and what is going on in our neighborhood.
So if you haven’t signed up for Nextdoor yet, stop reading this blog, go to www.nextdoor.com and join! Then come back here and find out how to invite your neighbors.
Inviting others is simple. When you are on the home screen you will see a little outline of a person. Click on it to see the invite options.
When you click on it a box of the different ways that you can invite neighbors will appear
If you click on the different options it will explain what each of the options means. Also, if you are using the mobile app you can invite via text. These photos were taken on the desktop version so that option is not available. With so many ways available to invite people you are sure to find an option that will suit the needs of you and your neighbors.
So the challenge this month is to choose whatever methods work best for you and then extend the invitation to your neighbors. If you have any questions or you need help printing the invites email firstname.lastname@example.org and I would be happy to assist you in getting those invites.
Especially during these cold winter months when it can be more challenging to see our neighbors face to face Nextdoor is a valuable tool to utilize in the journey of getting to know our neighbors better. I hope that you will join us this month in our February Good Neighbor Challenge! I look forward to hearing about how it goes for you.
